Basic Services Demat Account. Introduced by SEBI, it is designed for small retail investors to reduce costs. It provides basic services but requires zero or heavily reduced Annual Maintenance Charges (AMC) compared to regular demat

Who is Eligible for BSDA

As per SEBI Circular No. SEBI/HO/MIRSD/MIRSD-PoD1/P/CIR/2024/91 dated June 28, 2024, a demat account qualifies for BSDA classification if all the following conditions are met

  • Sole / First Holder: The individual has, or proposes to have, only one demat account where they are the sole or first holder.
  • One BSDA per Investor: The individual can hold only one BSDA in their name across all depositories (NSDL and CDSL combined). Individuals with other demat accounts where they are not the first holder remain eligible for BSDA on the single account where they are sole/first holder.
  • Holding Value Cap: Total value of securities held in the account must not exceed ■ 10,00,000 (Rupees Ten Lakh) at any point in time (revised upward from the earlier ■ 2 lakh cap).
  • Resident Status: The account holder must generally be a Resident Individual. NRIs, HUFs, corporates, and partnerships are typically not eligible (a few DPs extend BSDA to NRIs — verify with the specific DP).
  • Joint Holdings: Both single and joint accounts are eligible, provided all holders individually satisfy the above criteria

What Happens if Eligibility is Breached

if holdings exceed 10 lakh at any valuation check, the account is automatically converted to a Regular (Non-BSDA) demat account, and standard AMC applies from that point. Eligibility is re-checked periodically (weekly/monthly, depending on the DP) — CDSL, for instance, supplies DPs a monthly list of BOIDs eligible for BSDA as of the last working day of each month.
